The Indian Ocean Nodule Field

The Indian Ocean Nodule Field

$225

The book includes a synthesis of research findings on the structure and evolution of the Central Indian Ocean Basin and its ferromanganese deposits, in particular, on the exploration campaign since 1980s. A comprehensive mixture of recent studies along with classical theories starting from the 1960s is the hallmark of the book. Recent concepts and hypotheses, and also critical appreciation of the state-of-the-art knowledge on nodule formation and resource management are incorporated. After limiting the geographical extension of the nodule field and describing its physiographic, geological, biological, physical and chemical characteristics in chapter 1, the various structural, tectonic and volcanic elements are described in chapters 2 and 3. The bottom sediment characteristics that floor the nodules and crusts are dealt with in chapter 4. The nodules and crusts are described in detail in chapter 5, and their process of formation in the light of variable source material, local and regional tectonic activities, and midplate secondary volcanisms are discussed. The mining, environment, metallurgy, legal and economic aspects of the nodule resources are discussed in chapter 6. This title fulfils the growing need to bring voluminous, but scattered information in the form of a book for easy dissemination to students and researchers. * First dedicated book on the Indian Ocean manganese nodule resources * Comprehensively discusses the dynamics of nodule formation in the Indian Ocean Nodule Field (IONF) * Independently assesses the influence of tectonics and volcanism on the manganese nodule resource potential in local and regional scales

Nitrogen-fixing Leguminous Symbioses

Nitrogen-fixing Leguminous Symbioses

$239

Nodules produced on legume roots by root-nodule bacteria provide the major nitrogenous input into natural and agricultural systems worldwide. This book provides analysis of what is known about this symbiosis, its origins, the process of nodule formation and development, and the biochemistry and genetics of nodular nitrogen fixation.

Marine Mineral Exploration

Marine Mineral Exploration

$272

The past 20 years have seen extensive marine exploration work by the major industrialized countries. Studies have, in part, been concentrated on Pacific manganese nodule occurrences and on massive sulfides on mid-oceanic ridges. An international jurisdictional framework of the sea-bed mineral resources was negotiated by the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III). A most important outcome of this conference was the establishment of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of at least 200 nautical miles for all coastal states and the recognition of a deep-sea regime. Mineral deposits in EEZ areas are fairly unknown; many areas need detailed mapping and mineral exploration, and the majority of coastal or island states with large EEZ areas have little experience in exploration for marine hard minerals. This book describes the systematic steps in marine mineral exploration. Such exploration requires knowledge of mineral deposits and models of their formation, of geophysical and geochemical exploration methods, and of data evaluation and interpretation methods. These topics are described in detail by an international group of authors. A short description is also given of marine research vessels, evaluation of marine exploration examples; and an overview is provided of the jurisdictional situation after UNCLOS III.

Biological Nitrogen Fixation

Biological Nitrogen Fixation

$239

This volume covers recent developments in both fundamental and applied research in biological nitrogen fixation. It emphasizes the application of biological nitrogen fixation for sustainable agriculture, which should lead to poverty alleviation, environmental protection, and good agricultural practices generally. The roles of, and advances in, plant breeding, plant molecular biology, nodule physiology, and symbiotic and associative interactions between plants and microbes in sustaining agricultural productivity and soil fertility are described. The evolution of symbioses and nitrogen fixation are also covered in this volume. To ensure high agricultural productivity, while protecting the environment (both soil and water resources), requires plant cultivars that also respond to beneficial microbes. The volume, therefore, describes the physiology and genomics of nitrogen-fixing bacteria together with the biochemistry and molecular genetics of the nitrogenase enzyme that actually fixes atmospheric nitrogen to a usable form. This volume, which covers the most recent data on the role of nitrogen fixation in agriculture and forestry and on the biology of both plants and nitrogen-fixing microbes, is intended to serve as a useful reference for students and researchers, both in the laboratory (academic and commercial) and in the field.

Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (Hardcover)

Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (Hardcover)

$148.44

In this volume Dr Hui has brought together a comprehensive overview of gestational trophoblastic disease that includes all the currently recognized entities: complete and partial hydatidiform moles, placental site trophoblastic tumor, epithelioid trophoblastic tumor, gestational choriocarcinoma, persistent gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, placental site nodule and exaggerated placental site reaction. Each entity is reviewed in detail, with emphasis on genetic background, clinical presentation, pathologic findings and ancillary studies, differential diagnosis and clinicopathological correlations.Descriptions of the pathology are supported by numerous excellent photomicrographs. Recent advances in our understanding of the genetics of gestational trophoblastic diseases are stressed. Introductory chapters cover the developmental biology of the placenta and the genetic basis of gestational trophoblastic disease, and one chapter is devoted to the molecular diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease. This chapter includes a review of the use of short tandem repeat (STR) genotyping which is of particular value in the diagnosis of hydatidiform moles. The final chapter covers clinical aspects of gestational trophoblastic disease, including treatment. The text throughout is current and thoroughly referenced. This book will be of great value to pathologists, community gynecologists, gynecological pathologists and medical students.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (Paperback)

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (Paperback)

$29.81

Until now, there has been no uniform system for reporting the results of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) results, either in the U.S. or overseas. The terminology framework described in this book is an important advance in the field of cytopathology. It is a brainchild of the multidisciplinary National Cancer Institute Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration State of The Science Conference, held in Bethesda, MD in October, 2007. This book will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It will serve as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.Thyroid FNA is one of the most commonly performed cytologic procedures and is the standard diagnostic method for managing the patient with a thyroid nodule. In the past, ambiguous and inconsistent diagnostic criteria and terminology have hampered sample interpretation and patient management. It is hoped that, by bringing together national and international thyroid experts from diverse disciplines, the book will achieve its goal: to provide the reader with a generously illustrated and user-friendly reference on this unified approach to thyroid diagnostic criteria and reporting. The book will succinctly summarize and illustrate the salient points in the diagnosis of the non-neoplastic and neoplastic thyroid diseases. The chapters will be set up as follows: 1. Background, 2. Criteria, 3. Explanatory Notes, and 4. Sample reports. The development of the Bethesda System for Thyroid FNA parallels the development of the Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, which was also the result of an NCI-sponsored multidisciplinary conference. Now in its 2nd edition (Solomon and Nayar, 2004, Springer), The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology revolutionized the reporting of Pap test results. Virtually every cytopathology laboratory in the U.S. (and a large number overseas) uses the Bethesda System for reporting Pap tes
